Stylo 04

I’m still pinching myself over this. I was asked to contribute to the online children’s sewing magazine STYLO. I know! Today is release day and I can hardly contain myself. I’ve been DYING to share my look, and even more so to see how the whole thing comes together!!

It was so much fun being a collaborator for issue 4. I was a part of the “1 fabric 5 ways” series so I was given this fabulous Alison Glass fabric, Plus in Shortbread from the Handcrafted line. Honestly the fabric threw me for a loop. I love it- I had almost bought it myself a month earlier- but the muted tones didn’t immediately jive with the high fructose theme in my mind. As with most things that challenge us, this proved to push me and ultimately I’m totally in love with how it all came together. The final looks feel perfect for summer even with the lack of neon. And these colors are SO me, so I feel like this look is very representative of my style. And because the fabric wasn’t quite jiving with the look I initially thought I’d be making, I ended up designing a dress for Charly myself that I’m planning to release as my first PDF pattern! There’s more info about the Blue Ridge Dress here, but if all goes well I’ll be releasing mid/late June.

Since Charly is a girl who will only wear dresses, but also is 4 and doesn’t have any concept of sitting like a lady (nor do I feel she should be worrying about that at this age!) I made her some Summer Shorties (a free pattern from Baste & Gather) using this red spandex from Girl Charlee. Nothing to see here, folks…

For Caroline’s look I chose this striped rayon from Girl Charlee for the LOL Swing Top from Jennuine Design. It was my first LOL and I really love the shape! I pieced the top with some red cotton on the top portion to tie in more of the red from Charly’s dress.

Caroline’s shorts are made using this stretch denim from Joann and the Clover Shorts pattern from Mouse House Creations. I used the Plus fabric for the waistband facing and inside the pockets for a fun added detail. I’ve been wanting to make this pattern for a while so I was happy to find a perfectly coordinating fabric on my last ditch effort at fabric shopping for these looks! More details about accessories are included in the magazine.

I want to say we had such a great time taking these pictures, but the reality is that my kids were not very cooperative and the fact that there are even usable shots is the miracle work of my good friend/awesome photographer Brinn from Almira B Photography. She’s amazing, and I owe basically every good picture of my family ever to her mad skills. We met up with her for the photoshoot in Lynchburg, VA where her husband is running this shaved ice shack that he built himself, down to the hand split shingles. Yes, they are the coolest people we know.

Major thanks to my sweet fam for being so supportive. Matt is always kind to let me bounce sewing ideas off of him, knowing full well that he doesn’t understand a lot of what I’m saying and also that he couldn’t care less. But he listens! And as you can see, my children were rewarded well for their work as models, albeit uncooperative ones.

If you haven’t checked it out already you should probably head over there. It’s over 300 pages of amazing hand sewn clothes for kids. Inspirational is kind of an understatement. Plus I want to chat! What were your favorite looks? Anything that sparked an idea? I’m blown away by Debora’s clear rain jacket. And of course Tara’s stuff- she’s totally inspiring to me. I love everything Trine does, but that quilted floral jacket is something I want in my closet! And those pink and orange dresses from Marta are amazing! Gah- heading back over to drool some more!

And hey, if you’re feeling inspired to get sewing, you can snag some fabric from Girl Charlee who provided some of my fabrics and others for the magazine. 10% off for new customers! Michael Levine also provided fabric for the magazine and is offering 10% off your entire purchase with the code STYLO4.

I love your outfits and your photos. Especially the one with the blooming trees is just perfect!
I had exactly the same feeling when I first received the fabric, so fun to see that we came up with a similar color scheme in the end. Great work!

I think our looks could have been combined and looked lovely together in a spread, haha! It is so fun to see everyone’s hard work all in one place. Such a great issue!
